Black Hat is a musical toybox for grown-ups, combining folk, pop, rock, jazz and the occasional classical masterpiece with intelligent lyrics from a real-life perspective.
Frankie the K (Dr. Frank Koscielski), whose passions include bowdlerizing Procol Harum and smashing other people's guitars, originally played in the respected Detroit band Badge in the late 1960's and 1970's, before rediscovering the joys of Chopin and Mozart in the 1980's.
Dr. Jim Hart, a longtime Detroit musician, built his reputation playing with numerous local and national acts throughout his career. He and Frankie teamed up in the late 1990's to form the blues/funk group big SHORTY. Hart also plays with the swing band Cats Pajamas.
Jon Reynolds, the newest addition to the band, has been playing bass and guitar for over 40 years. Based in Chicago and Indianapolis and now Detroit, his resume is as long as his upright.
Dr. Caroline Maun, after earning a Ph.D. in English from the University of Tennessee and a detour in Baltimore, swept herself into Detroit and met both Frankie and Jim. She is the author of a book of poetry titled The Sleeping that appeared in 2006. She injected her sophisticated yet humorous lyrics into the mix, and a new group was born. Together, the band pursues a delicate balance between musical debauchery and pragmatism, and the result is a true listener's delight.
